Common questions

The game asks for microphone permission — why?

Your child's voice is the controller: the app listens for the practice words and for loudness. Speech recognition runs entirely on the device. Nothing is recorded, nothing is uploaded. If you declined the permission, you can enable it in iOS Settings → SaySprout → Microphone & Speech Recognition — the app shows a red "Pip can't hear!" banner while it is off.

It isn't hearing my child

Open the gear icon → Grown-up settings → Voice → Mic Check & Calibrate. Talk and watch the bar move — that proves the microphone works — then run the short calibration so the games are tuned to your child's real voice in your real room. Turning on "Accept close attempts" also helps the youngest voices.

Can my child play by tapping instead of speaking?

Speaking is the default and tapping never skips it. If voice can't run (no permission, or on-device recognition unavailable), tap buttons appear automatically so nobody is stuck. A grown-up can also allow tapping any time: Grown-up settings → turn off "Voice only".
